Cruising from San Diego to Seattle

Our Journey: We are cruising from departure port SAN DIEGO to destination port SEATTLE.


Our boat: A 47-foot motor yacht built by Stephens in 1963. Updated and refitted with twin John Deere diesels, an Achilles tender, and lots of gear and food aboard. Along with two old guys.


Our Purpose: What are we trying to prove? That is an excellent question.


First Answer: to get the boat to Seattle

Second Answer: That being in our late 50's early 60's we are not too old to have an adventure.

Our Weather: It's looking tolerably good, with a bit of wind but not any large swells.:

  • N wind around 10 kt. Mostly sunny. Mixed swell...WNW 4 ft and SSW 2 ft. Wind waves around 2 ft.
  • Thursday NightN wind around 15 kt. Partly cloudy. Mixed swell...WNW 3 ft and S 2 ft. Wind waves around 3 ft.
  • FridayNNW wind around 10 kt. Sunny. Mixed swell...WNW 3 ft and SSW 2 ft. Wind waves around 2 ft.
  • Friday NightNNW wind 10 to 15 kt, with gusts as high as 20 kt. Mostly cloudy. Mixed swell...WNW 3 ft and S 2 ft. Wind waves 1 to 3 ft.
  • SaturdayNW wind 5 to 10 kt increasing to 10 to 15 kt in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 20 kt. Mostly sunny. Mixed swell...WNW 3 ft and S 2 ft. Wind waves 1 to 3 ft.
Our route: Up the Pacific Coast, starting with a diagonal course past Catalina Island, the Channel Islands, making the curve around Point Conception, and then staying more or less 5 to 10 miles from the coast. Here's a simplified map:
